Many of Egypt’s greatest sites were not built with access in mind. With planning, many travellers with limited mobility or other needs still enjoy them, and the earlier you tell us what you need, the better the trip.
The honest picture
Ancient sites have uneven stone, steps and narrow passages. Some places work well and others do not. We would rather tell you that before you book than on the day.
What to expect
- Giza plateau: sandy, uneven ground around the Pyramids and the Sphinx. The inside of the pyramids is steep and narrow and is not suitable for everyone.
- Karnak and Luxor Temple: large sites with uneven stone paving and few ramps. A private guide can shorten the route and choose the best viewpoints.
- Tombs in the Valley of the Kings: steps and slopes. You can choose which tombs to enter and skip the steepest.
- Museums: large buildings, so route planning and sitting breaks help.
- Nile cruises and dahabiyas: gangways and steps between decks. Some larger cruise ships have lifts; dahabiyas, which are small sailing boats, generally do not. Tell us your needs and we will check the boat and the cabin before you book.
- Hotels and vehicles: we can ask for ground-floor rooms or rooms served by a lift, and a private vehicle can stop close to entrances.
Tell us what you need
When you enquire, tell us about anything that affects how you travel:
- how far you can walk, and how you manage steps and uneven ground;
- whether you use a wheelchair, a walker or a stick;
- hearing or vision needs;
- medical needs, allergies and dietary requirements;
- the pace that suits you.
We check each site, hotel and boat against what you tell us, suggest alternatives where a place will not work, and plan the days around your pace.
