Responsible Travel in Egypt

Egypt’s monuments, reefs and desert have lasted because people looked after them. A few simple habits on your trip help them last.

Respect the monuments

  • Do not climb on monuments or touch painted or carved surfaces: the oils on hands damage pigment and stone.
  • Photography rules differ from site to site, and some tombs do not allow cameras or flash. Your guide will tell you where.
  • Never take stones, pottery or sand as souvenirs.
  • Follow the signs and ropes; they protect the most fragile areas.

Animals

Camels, horses and donkeys work at many sites, and you are always free to say no to a ride.

  • Look at the animal first: shade, water, a well-fitted saddle and no visible injuries are good signs. Do not ride an animal that looks thin, hurt or overloaded.
  • If something worries you, tell your guide.
  • Do not feed street animals, wildlife or reef fish.

The Red Sea

  • Do not stand on or touch coral, and do not take shells or coral home.
  • Some sunscreens harm reefs. A rash vest or a mineral sunscreen is kinder to the coral.
  • Keep your distance from turtles and dolphins, and snorkel or dive only within your ability.

Water and waste

  • Carry a refillable bottle and ask your hotel or cruise where you can refill it, instead of buying plastic bottles all day.
  • In the desert, take your litter with you and stay on the tracks your driver uses.

People and money

  • Tipping is customary in Egypt. Small notes for guides, drivers and staff are part of their income.
  • Buy from local shops and artisans, and agree the price before you take something.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Dress modestly at mosques, churches and in small towns: cover shoulders and knees. Be considerate about eating and drinking in public by day during Ramadan.

Antiquities

It is illegal to take antiquities out of Egypt, and you should never buy an object that is sold as ancient.

How we work
