Egypt in Summer

Summer, from May to September, is hot inland and lively on the coast: quiet temples, lower prices and the warmest sea of the year.

Approximate long-term averages in °C. Aswan is a degree or two warmer than Luxor.

Luxor and Aswan reach about 40–42°C at midday and Cairo about 33–36°C. The heat is dry. The Red Sea is warm, about 24–29°C, and the coast catches a breeze, which makes the sea the natural choice.

Crowds and prices

Low inland, high on the coast. Temples and museums are at their quietest and city prices are lower. Red Sea and Mediterranean resorts fill with summer visitors, so book beach hotels early.

Summer questions

Is Egypt too hot in summer?

Inland, midday sightseeing in Upper Egypt is hard. Plan dawn starts, rest at midday and use the coasts; Cairo is hot but manageable with early starts and indoor visits.

Is summer cheaper?

Generally yes inland: fewer visitors means lower hotel and cruise prices than in winter. Beach resorts are busy, so prices there are firmer.

Is the sea good in summer?

Yes. It is warm, about 26–29°C in June to August, and ideal for snorkelling and diving.
