Egypt in April

April is a shoulder month: hot days in Upper Egypt, lovely weather in Cairo and on the coasts, and holiday weeks around Easter.

Weather in April

Cairo Luxor Hurghada (Red Sea)
Average high 29°C 35°C 30°C
Average low 15°C 17°C 21°C
Sea temperature – – 22°C

Approximate long-term averages in °C. Aswan is a degree or two warmer than Luxor.

Cairo reaches about 29°C, Luxor about 35°C and Hurghada 30°C. In Upper Egypt the middle of the day is hot, so the best plan is an early start, a break at midday and a late-afternoon visit. The sea is warm enough for most people, about 22°C.

Crowds and prices

Medium. Busy around Easter and other holiday weeks, quieter afterwards. Nile cruise and hotel prices start to soften once the holidays are over.

What is on in April

  • Sham El-Nessim, the spring festival that Egyptians celebrate with picnics and fish, falls on the Monday after Coptic Orthodox Easter (in April or May).
  • European Easter holidays (dates vary) bring more visitors to the first half of the month.

Trips that suit April

April questions

Is April too hot for Luxor and Aswan?

Days reach about 35°C: hot, but manageable if you sightsee in the morning and late afternoon. We plan early starts for the southern sites.

What is Sham El-Nessim?

An Egyptian spring festival on the Monday after Coptic Orthodox Easter. Families picnic in parks and along the Nile, so public places are busy that day.

Is April good for the Red Sea?

Yes. The air is about 30°C and the sea about 22°C, which suits beach days and snorkelling.
