Egypt in February

February is still high season: mild days, clear light and the sun festival at Abu Simbel, with school holidays bringing families.

Weather in February

Cairo Luxor Hurghada (Red Sea)
Average high 21°C 26°C 23°C
Average low 10°C 8°C 15°C
Sea temperature – – 20°C

Approximate long-term averages in °C. Aswan is a degree or two warmer than Luxor.

Days warm up slowly: about 21°C in Cairo and 26°C in Luxor. Nights are still cool, so evenings on a Nile cruise deck call for a jacket. The sea is at its coolest, around 20°C.

Crowds and prices

High. Mid-February brings school half-term breaks in several European countries, so the most popular hotels and cruise dates sell out early. Prices stay high through the month.

What is on in February

  • 22 February: the sun festival at Abu Simbel, when the sunrise reaches the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple of Ramesses II. It happens again on 22 October.
  • Ramadan can fall in this month in some years. It moves about 11 days earlier each year; in 2027 it is expected to begin around 8 February, depending on the moon.

Trips that suit February

What to pack

The same layers as January: warm evenings, light days. If your trip falls in Ramadan, dress modestly and be considerate about eating and drinking in public during the day.

February questions

On 22 February and 22 October, around sunrise. Abu Simbel is a long trip from Aswan, about three hours each way by road, so ask us about the timing.

Does Ramadan change a February trip?

Tours generally run as normal. Some restaurants open later in the day, opening hours can shift, and evenings have a festive feel after sunset. Ask us about your dates.

Is February too cold for the Red Sea?

It is the coolest month for the sea, about 20°C. The beaches are pleasant in the sun, but if swimming matters most, later months are warmer.
